The ‘babyverse’ is rife with misinformation

Parents are constantly bombarded with all these opinion-based ideas, cultural beliefs, opinions and old wives tales about sleep. 

Some are relics from generations past (ideas like ‘sleep begets sleep’, ‘sleep associations’ or ‘self-settling’).

Others are more recent concepts that have spread like wildfire across the socials (I’m looking at youwake windows’ and ‘overtiredness’!).

Unfortunately, none are backed by any good evidence. They’re not aligned with what’s considered to be biologically normal for human infants. And most have actually been disproven by scientific learnings and research.

But they’re still out there circulating and being presented to parents as if they’re ‘facts’. Sometimes by well-meaning friends or family, other times by ‘experts’ or professionals who are just not up to date with the latest evidence in sleep science, neuroscience or child development.

Quality information and guidance does exist, but it’s hidden among all the misinformation and so…

Before doing Georgina’s mini-course we were struggling with bedtime battles and frequent waking, pretty much every sleep cycle. We were exhausted, frustrated, irritable and there was friction between my husband and myself.

Great question and one I get a lot!

In a nutshell…

If you’re struggling with sleep and wakefulness, but the nights are still pretty manageable (you’re coping okay), the 5 Day Baby Sleep Mini-Course is probably all you need. 

The mini-course equips you with the latest evidence-based information on sleep and wakefulness (so you understand how sleep works and feel a lot more confident and relaxed about sleep in general) as well as effective strategies to help you improve sleep and settling without any form of sleep training.

For many parents, the mini-course is all they need. It can not only help you feel a lot more relaxed and confident, but the tips and strategies I share should also help you improve sleep and settling.

If you’re dealing with a lot of night wakefulness (frequent waking or extended periods of wakefulness/restlessness) and really struggling to function properly, the Baby Sleep Revolution (BSR) program is more likely to be the best option. 

Most parents join BSR because it’s not sustainable for them to keep going the way things are. They know they have to do something, but they don’t want to sleep train. 

BSR has been designed to help you improve the nights and get the rest you need, while still being able to respond to your little one in whatever way works best. 

The BSR program is unique – I developed it after finding that a percentage of little ones were still wakeful even when parents applied the general evidence-based strategies and principles I teach in the mini-course. 

The program involves following a specific step-by-step process designed to help you optimise your little one’s sleep pattern so they sleep for longer stretches at night, consistently going forward without any sleep training and you get the rest you need to function properly. Great question! I have a lot of parents come to me in a similar boat – they’ve made evidence-based changes to improve sleep (morning wake time, more stimulation during the day, a later bedtime), but haven’t been able to get consistently better nights. Some have seen glimpses of improvement, but then the nights have become wakeful again. Others haven’t noticed any real improvement.

The mini-course does have a focus on helping you understand how the sleep regulators work, and teaches you how to make tweaks and changes to help improve your LO’s sleep pattern. So if you’ve already tried something similar, you may find at least some of the information I share in the mini-course familiar.
For many little ones, these general tweaks and changes are all that’s needed to improve things. But there is a percentage of little ones who are still wakeful even after applying these basic principles properly. Sometimes it’s because something else is causing the wakefulness (e.g. a health-related cause, or separation stress/anxiety), but often it’s because they’re just very sensitive (have very low sleep needs) and making general tweaks and changes isn’t enough to properly optimise the sleep regulators.

If you’re in this position, I’d highly recommend looking at my Baby Sleep Revolution™ (BSR) program instead. I developed it for this exact reason – because I realised that some little ones need a more specific solution, and so I went about developing a unique process to help parents find the optimal sleep pattern that enables their little one to sleep for decent stretches at night, consistently. I frequently have parents who join the BSR program after trying a more general approach with little to no success, and they’re are able to get a great result with BSR!

While most of the general information, tips & strategies I share in the mini-course are also relevant for newborns, the segments on wakefulness are focused more on babies and toddlers 12+ weeks.

The newborn period is often quite (naturally and normally) wakeful. If you have a newborn and you’re concerned about wakefulness, it’s best to consult your healthcare provider as a first step so they can help you troubleshoot the possible causes, including any health or feeding related causes which can be more commonly picked up in the newborn period. If you’re still struggling with sleep once your little one gets to 12 weeks and there are no obvious health-related reasons – definitely come back & consider signing up for the mini-course!

Yes. If your little one was born prior to 37 weeks, please use their adjusted/corrected age.

No, not at all! In fact, a lot of the information in the 5 Day Baby Sleep Mini-Course is focused on sleep science in general and so the information and guidance applies not just to babies and toddlers, but also to older children and even adults. We’re all humans after all!

Of course, some of the information is more relevant to babies and younger toddlers (e.g. naps), but you should find the 5 Day Baby Sleep Mini-Course really helpful in general especially when it comes to understanding and troubleshooting night wakefulness – but even many of the sleep tips will be applicable!

I define sleep training as any method that requires you to either not respond to your little one’s signals at night, delay your response or not respond appropriately (e.g. patting them if they’d prefer to be rocked, or fed).

There are many different sleep training methods, referred to in the science world as ‘extinction’ or ‘graduated extinction’ methods. They all aim to sever the connection a baby’s brain makes between signalling for help and getting a response. So – if sleep training is ‘successful’ – the baby learns not to signal to their parent/s / caregiver/s at night any more.

What I teach is completely different. My focus is on helping you understand how sleep works (the physiology of sleep), get across the latest evidence (research) on sleep and wakefulness and learn how best to support your little one’s natural sleep regulators and make changes to optimise their sleep pattern. My mini-course and Baby Sleep Revolution™ program are effective alternatives to sleep training or ‘waiting it out’. 

I will always encourage and support you to respond to your little one quickly and in whatever way works best day and night. Feeding to sleep and (safe) bedsharing – or whatever settling method/s and safe sleep environment/s you and your little one prefer – are absolutely fine!

My aim with the Mini-Course is to help as many parents as possible access evidence-based information on baby & toddler sleep. The course format has been designed to do this in the most effective (and wallet-friendly) way.

The information in the course is presented in an easy to understand format. But if anything is unclear in a video, or you still have questions about the content, you are able to ask for further information or clarification in the comments section underneath that video and we aim to respond within 2 working days. All responses are general in nature – we are not able to provide personalised advice or guidance specific to you or your situation.

If you need more help or support with sleep, the Baby Sleep Revolution™ (BSR) program is definitely worth a look as it comes with the option of accessing personalised guidance and support from me and my team, and from our private BSR parent community. I don’t offer private 1:1 coaching sessions with parents. The main reason for this is because I’ve found – through a lot of testing and refining over time – that 1:1 sessions don’t give parents the best results. Parents find they either just need to make a few simple tweaks and changes (which the mini-course can help with) or, they find they need regular support and guidance over a longer period of time (usually a number of weeks) which is where the Baby Sleep Revolution can help.

Right now they don’t, but I’m working on it as a priority because it’s important that as many parents as possible can access this information. This page will be updated as soon as they become available – so please keep checking!

The hosting platform (Kajabi) is continually being updated with new functionality, so if an audio-only option becomes available (which is apparently in the pipeline), it’s something I’ll definitely be looking at! You can of course play the videos and just listen to them.

Written transcripts are not currently available, but they’re something I’m looking to include in the future. So watch this space.
